The trick is keeping the root end of the onion intact while cutting it:
Then I cut parallel cuts, almost all the way to the root end and then again like so:
The result?
Perfectly chopped or diced onion without any hassle.Another quick onion tip: if they make you cry, and you have contacts, wear the contacts while cutting the onion. No more tears.

This IS a good idea, especially since the knife slid on me a month or so ago and took off a little part of my finger and nail. I was lucky, could have been worse! This way, the onion will stay in place better! Thanks.
Gotta try it!
I do the parallel cuts first. I'm not as adept and it make it easier for me, if the onion isn't moving all around.
I do the parallel cuts first too. I learned this technique from watching "Two Hot Tamales" on Food Network. A show that has been long since canceled. Used to love those girls.
Thanks for the tip. I knew there had to be an easy way to dice an onion. I will try this.
Do you have any suggestions for cooking dinner for 25 people? My family is going on vacation with my husbands's family. He has 4 siblings who are all married with kids. Each sibling will cook 1 night. I have no idea how to cook for so many people, at least beyond the usual spaghetti, hamburgers etc..
