Ever tried making "from scratch" oatmeal in the microwave? It couldn't be easier, is cost effective, is a healthy, less-sugary breakfast option and best of all, super duper tasty and easy to adjust to what you have on hand.
R and I made some oatmeal this morning, and getting into the bipartisan spirit, we made ours with red dried cranberries and blueberries (no the blueberries in the picture aren't moldy, just frozen...we buy tons of blueberries when they are in season and freeze them).Microwave Oatmeal
1/3 c old fashioned oats
2/3 c water
1/8 t ground cinnamon
2 t brown sugar (or sometimes we use maple syrup)
a couple tablespoons or more of "add-ins," we use dried cranberries, walnuts, cut up apple, blueberries, or whatever we have on hand.
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Microwave for about 2 minutes. Splash a bit of milk on top to cool it off once cooked, if desired.
Perfect for any morning, but particularly apropos for the big election day excitement.

That's exactly how we make it. I love to add a banana or chopped apple, too. Warning to your readers - use a big bowl - oatmeal has a tendancy to overflow in the microwave!
We make oatmeal almost every single day....often adding peanut butter and a drizzle of honey! So good and filling, too.
I can't wait to try this. I can never get the old fashioned oats to turn out right when I cook them on the stove.
Sounds good; blueberries and dried cranberries together! There is so many different ways to make oatmeal. My neighbor uses vanilla cream coffee creamer.
Great idea! Just might be tomorrows breakfast.
Okay, I've never even thought about making from-scratch oatmeal and Hunter loves oatmeal! Thank you, J, for the idea. :)
Voted this afternoon. This morning, the line was around the clubhouse, past the pool, down the street to the park! (2 hour wait)
Just found your site thanks to your comments on the Yummy Mummy Kim's blog. So glad to find another mom-blogger with boys who wants to cook healthy stuff. I'll bookmark your site, try out some recipes and may even find time to blog again....
Looks yummy and healthy!!!!
We try this trick often, but I sometimes nuke it too long and then there's oatmeal all over the microwave. Gotta be vigilant - or get a bigger bowl.
I am loyal to cooking it on the stove (creamier in my opinion), but my Mom prefers the microwave. I ate this every morning last year when I was pregnant. I *love* how economical and HEALTHY it is. Julia has been asking for oatmeal lately and we had it as a snack yesterday.
My trick is to get the 1-minute version (no less fiber in it, just smaller pieces to cook) and while you are heating the milk/water, add some dried cherries. Once it starts boiling, add your oatmeal and set your timer to one minute. Couldn't be easier in my opinion!!
Finally...a post of yours that I regularly tackle in my own home!
Yum!!! This is so what I need in the am!
I have never put blueberries in my oatmeal...but I did this morning! Yummy!
Thanks for all of *your* tips on oatmeal...i plan to try them out!
