Whine and Wine

I love wine. No, I am not a big drinker, but I love learning about wine, tasting wine and pairing wine.

In fact, before having the boys, SPH and I hit the road and visited vineyards here and abroad many times:

Can't you just sense the carefree, relaxed, well-rested, no-kid-responsibility attitude in the last picture?

Many, okay, most nights we have wine with or before dinner. After a day of work, I am ready for a few sips of vino. Usually doesn't go beyond one glass, just an aperitif to enjoy while dinner is served.

But the other day R was talking and said, "I can't wait until I can have wine every day too!" I got me thinking...do you ever wonder about drinking alcohol in front of your kids? Obviously, getting hammered in front of the little ones is not going to qualify you for parent-of-the-year, but how much is too much?

Hmm...not sure. Just checked and they show up on my screen? Perhaps I need to check from SPH's laptop?

My husband and I don't drink so my son knows almost nothing about alcohol of any kind.

I don't mind people drinking around me, but I don't like it when they drink around my kids. But I am not going to approach them about it and ask them to stop or go some where else.

I can't see the pics either. :(

Hubs and I have spoken about this too because we are social drinkers. Hubs drinks one glass of red wine each night because it's good for you. And I agree with you that more than one, especially for women, is not good. I even split mine with club soda when I want two glasses worth without actually having 2 glasses of wine. But anyway, I trust in my son and we talk about things like and he understands the difference between having a glass attached to our hips and just having a drink here and there.

SPC, I think you were drunk when you posted this...I can't see the pictures!

Both John and I drinks (beer and wine) in front of the kids. My thought is that since we are drinking in moderation and responsibly, then it's not a problem.

I think that drinking "in secret" from the kids would attach more of a stigma to it.

Ugh. I just read mine again, I must be drunk!

We have drinks in front of the kids. Like a glass of wine with dinner or a beer while watching the game. Not every night. Not always multiple.

I'm worried that I sounded too lush-y in my original comment.

No pics for me either.

I grew up in France. My parents had wine at every meal. My grandmother did too although she diluted hers with water (yuck!). I learned to think of wine as part of the meal, and not as a way to get drunk. Now I drink a half a glass of wine every night with my dinner, whenever I cook something good. I think I'm teaching my kids how to drink responsively.

Great thought provoking post!

I agree that in moderation it's fine. I don't drink much at all anymore, but my daughter has seen me drink an occasional glass of wine or a daiquiri at my mom's (yum!) My husband drinks occasionally and I don't see a problem with that. Of course, he's not getting drunk though.
